Before You Conceive

So You Want to Have a Baby?

Great! I am thrilled to hear it. What an amazing journey that you are about to embark on. You could soon be someones mother. I know this is a very exciting time in your life. However there are some recommendations before you get your positive pregnancy test. Following certain steps can help you avoid heartache in the long run.

1. Make a Doctor's Appointment

This is a very important step. Many women assume that getting pregnant is natural and will happen easily and effortlessly. However, this is not always true. Also, getting cleared by your Gynecologist may help you avoid the misfortune of a miscarriage. Before I had my miscarriage, I had know idea of the frequency in which they occur. Fortunately, sometimes this can be avoided.

At your doctor's appointment, let them know that you are thinking about becoming pregnant and that you want to get checked out. It is possible that they will do a Pap Smear and draw some blood. These test can reveal things that may disrupt your pregnancy.

Chances are that there is nothing wrong but I would rather be safe than sorry.

2. STOP Taking Birth Control

I would advise you to stop taking birth control as soon as you know you want to have a baby, even before seeing your doctor. They will tell you to get off of it anyway. Birth control disrupts natural process in the body; intending to prevent pregnancy.

If you have been taking birth control it may take awhile to get pregnant. It could take anywhere from 6 months to a year. However, this is not in every case. So I suggest using condoms unless you are prepared to be pregnant the following month.

3. Eat Healthy

If you are going to carry a life within you, it is advised that you treat your body well. Eat as healthy as you possibly can so that you can be the image of health when you become pregnant. If you are concerned about your eating habits speak with a Nutritionist.

4. Exercise

You do not want to be tire and out of shape when you are pregnant. It is a good idea for you to create a workout routine of some sort. It doesn't have to be strenuous. I brisk walk in the afternoon will do.

5. START Taking Prenatal Vitamins

Yes, you want to start prenatal vitamins as soon as possible. You never know when you will get pregnant and some women go weeks without knowing. It is good to have these vitamins already in your system. The over the counter type works well.

Remember that you are about to carry a life within you. All of these steps will help you to nurture and protect your baby with the best of your ability.
